Chapter Eleven

The interior of the Salt and Sea was a combination of rich wood paneling like on an old ship and freshly painted white plaster. The ceiling was covered with heavily embossed tin tiles, from which hung pendant lights that looked like lanterns. One full wall was covered with dozens of small apothecary drawers from some previous incarnation of the space. Long wooden oars were mounted above this, and in front of the wide picture window hung a model of a shark. It was a fun and elegant setting for a meal, but I was too worried over the confrontation that was surely coming to get much enjoyment from it. Honestly, I was only paying such close attention to the decor to avoid noticing whether the people inside were already as aware of my outburst on the deck as those outside had been.

“What is this all about?” Noah whispered as we took our seats inside the restaurant. “You accused a woman of murder in front of the entire restaurant.”

“I may have leaped hastily to a few conclusions,” I hedged, not wanting to come right out and admit to mistakes until I’d established that I had actually made any.

“By which you mean accusing Sybil’s date of murder?”

I cringed. I’d been hoping he’d arrived on the scene late enough that he’d missed that part. “You knew Jacqueline was Sybil’s date?”

“Of course. Couldn’t you tell by the way they were standing so close to each other out there? I knew it the second we arrived.”

In retrospect, they’d seemed kind of cozy, but honestly, I guess I hadn’t given it a lot of thought. I’d just been so convinced that she was having dinner with James, I’d let that color my observations. “But, isn’t that weird?” I argued.

Noah’s expression turned more severe than it already had been. “I really didn’t peg you as one to judge like that. People can’t help who they’re attracted to.”

“I didn’t mean it like that! The fact they’re on a date isn’t what’s bothering me,” I corrected. “It’s that Jacqueline’s fiancé just died—like, two days ago! I’ve heard of getting back out there, but come on. Even you have to admit that’s a little fast. And why would Sybil agree to it?”

“What did I agree to?” Sybil asked as she and Jacqueline finally made it to the table.

Noah and I were seated on one side, with two empty chairs across from us. There had been a delay of close to a minute between us sitting and their arrival, during which I could only imagine one of the women encouraging and cajoling the other to hear me out, though I wasn’t sure which one would be more inclined to argue on my behalf. I didn’t have high hopes that either one of them would like what I had to say, but I planned to say it anyway.

“Thank you for deciding to join us,” I began, starting with a conciliatory tone in hopes it would improve the outcome. “And Sybil, I owe you an apology.
